Mary Strong Clemens (1873-1968) was a botanical explorer who collected in remote areas of the South Pacific. She transmitted valuable material to George B. Cummins, Edwin Bingham Copeland, R. E. Holttum, Elmer Drew Merrill and C. G. G. J. van Steenis, all of whom relied extensively upon her collections for their studies. She was born Mary Knapp Strong in New York in 1873. Elmer Drew Merrill was born in East Auburn, Maine in 1876 and died in 1956. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maine in 1898 and his master's in 1904. In 1902 he went to the Philippines where he remained for 21 years as professor of botany at the University of the Philippines and director of the Bureau of Science at Manila.
